Guide to Bohemian Festival Hair à la Flower Crown
"As I float along the festival grounds my bohemian spirit is combined with equal parts 70s love child and the energy of goddess Beyonce when she was pregnant, minus the pregnancy part."
I’m a self proclaimed festival girl and sucker for flower crowns. Cue the memes and eye rolls, but my soul lives and breathes for the long flowy dresses and floral accents. I’ve attended countless music festivals including Coachella, Outside Lands and FYF. I love seeing my favorite musicians amongst all my friends and endless festival goers. As I float along the festival grounds my bohemian spirit is combined with equal parts 70s love child and the energy of goddess Beyonce when she was pregnant, minus the pregnancy part. Start by creating natural looking waves, using a diffuser and curling iron. Sometimes the best way to get carefree waves is with day old hair, meaning it isn’t freshly washed. Try using Playa’s Endless Summer Wave Spray to create texture and Soft Volume Powder to absorb oil and give roots a lift. This duo is a festival girls best friend. Control frizz and keep hair smelling fresh with Plays’s Ritual hair oil.
Once hair is to your textured liking, it’s time to bring in some little braids. I call this the 3 x 2 x 3. Three braids on both the right and left sides of your hair and two in the back, all evenly scattered. Divide hair from the top and create six small individual braids. Secure with a small hair rubber band. The bohemian textured hair and braids is enough to bring your festival spirit out. But wait! There’s more.
This is where flowers literally start sprouting out of my hair. Creating a flower crown is as fun and creative as the feeling of being at Coachella with Florence & The Machines. Run to the market and pick out your favorite blossoms. Start with a base. The flower crown base is usually more of a filler if you were creating a bouquet, like baby’s breath or greenery. You want a base that is bendable so you can wrap it around your head. To fill in the crown pick out flowers that speak to you. You can go as colorful or subdued as you like!
To create the crown you will need bobby pins and hair rubber bands. Begin by wrap the the “base” plant or flowers around the crown of your hair. Start with four pieces of the plant to create a solid shape. Use pins and rubber bands to tie and secure base together and to head. Layer more pieces of the base plant for desired thickness and to create a strong base for attaching flowers to. Start placing the next layer flower and connect to base and hair in areas desired. The final flower I use is usually the most special. It is a pop of color and a flower I scatter. Creating a flower crown is trial and error and placing flowers intuitively to where you love it most. A flower crown takes an excess amount of bobby pins so come prepared to pin away for a secure and stable crown. Once complete your etherial being will spiral into next level goddess.
